I like to think at the end of Season 9, Spike actually asked for an allowance and Twilight was like “Allowance? You’re a federal employee for Celestia’s sake! You’ve been getting a steady paycheck since the day you formally became my assistant! Did you not once ever open your bank account?” Then Spike opens his bank account and this happens XD

It’s a lot of little things. She’s building a rapport with someone, who likely will see her as trustworthy and may hire her in the future, and the more laborers who demand better treatment the better working conditions overall, for herself included, may become. Since it costs her nothing to do it, it’s a free potential investment :P

I like to think Spike going on strike for like a week to get a slightly nicer allowance inadvertently inspired the Crystal Empire to adopt concepts of labor unions and workers rights to follow the example of their hero, and now the Crystal Empire is far more socially advanced than Equestria XD
