Let’s be honest the reason it’s getting hate isn’t because of “contradicting canon”. It’s getting hate because apparently there are people lurking in the shadows in 2023 afraid of pronouns and real life lgbt people. They like cute art with gay characters, but anything that reminds them of real life lgbt people that isn’t cute or porn feels them with hate, disgust or fear. Same for the downvoted dark skin arts, only do they like it if it fits a fantasy for them.

Is this supposed to be an AU? Otherwise this being the one in canon who has shown multiple male crushes, to the point it was a/the focus of those episodes and being such a romantic was a big part of characterization… If those male crushes ending badly is why she lost interest that would be valid.
But that’s a problem with most such art I’ve seen, they violate “show don’t tell” by telling their orientation without the narrative to show it hurting the representation and headcanon. If the art showed them being romantic with/crushing on someone that would be show it well enough to avoid this issue.
Sonic Boom stated “anytime someone calls attention to the breaking of gender roles, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality by implying that this is an exception and not the status quo.” That’s the problem just stating orientation without the narrative to naturally/organically demonstrate it does.
