Much like the other species around Equestria, I am guessing that they exist, but over a century of isolation has resulted in them becoming legends to the various ponies, similar to how each different pony race became legend until Sunny, Izzy, Pipp, and Zipp were able to reunite them.

I am hoping that, now that the pony tribes have been reunited, we can get more exploration into lands beyond Maretime Bay, Bridlewood, and Zephyr Heights, lands that would likely include species such as the dragons, yaks, griffins, and (yes), zebras.

The fact that the special does include a dragon does give me hope that this is the direction they are going in.
