I agree with the OP…though I think I’m noticing a pattern forming:
 
The first game is a by-the-numbers copy for the most part.
 
The second hits the right balance between seriousness and silliness, and finds it’s own identity.
 
The third goes completely off the rails into silliness under the erroneous belief that that is what the fanbase wanted more of.
 
Sound familiar?
 
Saints Row, anybody?
 
First game: By-the-numbers GTA knockoff, for the most part.
 
Second: Finds the right balance between silliness and seriousness, and has it’s own identity to distinguish itself from GTA.
 
Third: Goes completely off the rails under the auspices that “more silliness” is what the fanbase wanted.

Sigh I miss those.
