More variety in toys, at least? Kids love fantasy creatures. Plus, each generation of MLP had a dragon (G3 had two iirc, one for main generation - blue Spike, and another for Twinkle Wish Adventure - Whimsey Weatherbe, sort of 'antagonist', an obstacle and someone to show moral lessons with; G1 had even more - even if only one was in animated media, as much as I know, others were toys + in the comics/books), yes, G2 too (and their colour scheme looked strangely way too similar to this one's...). The other point is that franchise focuses on ponies mainly and started with them, thus 'My Little Pony', still, it might have other species in it and still stay fun :) (it's not the only example, e.g. Gummi Bears had a plenty of other creatures to add to stories, and Filly + Filly Funtasia shows animals who aren't horses sometimes, as well).
