That’s exactly what I think she’s doing the moment I saw her like that.
To her, more “friends” equaled more power, and that was it.
She was evil and deceptive from the start.
There is credence to that theory. There’s also the idea that she wanted as many ponies under her metaphorical thumb as possible, and thought the Crusaders would be essential to her plan, or else she didn’t want to lose a single one, and having them banned from the school premises because of her intentional fail jeopardized that. I do want to believe there was some good in her, before she became so obsessed with power.
I’m of the opinion that she really did wanna be friends with the CMC. Why else would she have felt bad for them in this scene? It couldn’t have been a facade seeing as there was no one even watching her at this moment.
