I think Equestria Girls began to go downhill after Rainbow Rocks. There was a report of studio interference that started the downfall.

Unfortunately, it’s too late for this to be officially revisted in comic book form. We should have said this back before the series ended, but we don’t have any choices left. I do wish we had chances this year, but again, we can’t.

Agreed. I do not understand, however why people keeping thinking this was the finale for the Equestria Girls series when the show’s staff said it was cancelled.
It wasn’t an ending; it was cancelled.
It fell really flat.
