Sh*t Jerome, get it together! That isn’t a gambit, that’s just an intentional blunder one would use when trying to make a game interesting against a novice.

One of the things I love most about chess is that pretty much any opening combination has its own name. Also yeah, the Jerome is one of the less useful gambits as it can easily lead to a quick loss of material

A better move would be moving the white bishop to check the king, then move up your knight two turns to take the rook (moving into the position the King was in, and the King can’t take the piece because of the bishop).

I take it back: I can see a way to net the knight, the pawn, and the bishop for just a knight. But it would require a very specific set of moves and the opponent not taking the most obvious counter.

Wait. This is a move common enough that people bothered to give it a name? What’s the point? Is there something hidden behind the name that would make this useful?
 
The best I can make out is potentially trading a knight for a knight and a pawn and getting the queen into play early. So maybe better board control?
