Dr. Sheida bore no smile on this cold night, nor was able to work as gaily, as excitedly as she often did, for she was in great mental exhaustion. If the young mare were to quit now and let the words of discouragement and laughters of mockery grow heavy on her, those narcissistic, narrow minded ponies would have won. For if she did not succeed, the fanciful would be the immodest and the very thought of that caused an acidic taste to arise in the back of Ev’s throat. The pegasus shifted herself, growing more and more drowsy as she continued to read and study a text book she had stolen from her brother that contained tales and content of ancient magic. If Ev wasn’t doing this for herself, she was doing it to pull the reigns on the cocky bastards who dare shun her life’s work. However, despite how exhausted she was, her attention was quickly arrested. In the long nights that Ev had sneakily stayed awake in her office, she had grown accustomed to the quaint effect with which the hoof falls of a single stallion or mare. This was quickly followed by a soft voice that always seemed to calm the young mare, even in the coldest states of her mental well being. “My dear friend, why are you still awake?” spoke a young, more feminine stallion, Mercury.
Ev allowed a hopeless sigh to escape her, “Mercury, my thoughts just won’t allow for rest. My chest burns. It feels like there is a fire eating away at it, the tongue of the flames licking whatever peace I had. I’ve grown far too impatient and I’m so close to a breakthrough I can just taste it. Until I find a way to possess magic, I cannot rest.”
Mercury saw a look in her eyes, one he couldn’t describe as anything else than desperation. He was a unicorn so his mind was never as toiled as the doctor’s when it came to the matter of magic. But if Ev was right, and she was close to a breakthrough, Mercury couldn’t help but contemplate the size of the grave the doctor was digging for herself, if she were to succeed. “It’s so hard to continue on when all of the high society blocks each step I take. I won’t give up, but I’m drained you see,” spoke Ev with tiredness in her voice, ~

“what if they are right, and I’ve let my goal misguide me?”
With a soft smile, sending all his fears to the back of his mind, the unicorn walked over and sat next to his good friend. Immediately, Ev felt the warmth of the unicorn by her side and she felt her body loosen up and relax from it’s former tense self. “And what if you were right? You must see it through, or you’ve wasted all your education and life’s work,” Mercury softly explained.
Ev could never point out why, but Mercury’s presence never failed to ease the young mare, and all her anxieties and besieged questions had gone astray. “Then, tomorrow night, make an excuse to Queen Amore that I shan’t attend the monthly dinner. I’m aware that all of high society will be there, but I must complete this spell. The custom scrolls I ordered will be delivered to my door in the morning and I have no doubt that they hold the last bit I that I’ve been looking for. Tomorrow, I will show everyone that it can be done, and if I am to attend the party, it will be with magic.”
