It’s writer incompetence and shock factor instead of doing something well… and i cannot believe there has been 3 versions of the Grogar twist in the leaks…
The plot twist itself is awful in many senses with logic and implications.
Would have been better using another draconequus (adapt Cosmos, Princess Eris or create a new one that have a plot that envolves about forgot the past and walk to the future) or hire Grant Morrison to give a extravagant way to defeat Discord and let the mane6 save the day @Background Pony #B3E1
 
Logic u say oh make sense oh what fun is there in making sense for a character like discord

He started the whole thing, and then chose the punishment for the ones he manipulated. The result? He and the ponies came across as vindictive as the three villains their supposedly better than.

Then again emotions were really hight at the moment and the princesses were probably really pissed at the trio. Perhaps with time passed they will reconsider they reconsider they decision.

Because he is too overpowerd. Story needed him to get him out of picture in order to progress.
 
I think there wasn’t even a option that trio didn’t get better of Grogar/Discord, otherwise he could just snap his finger and teleport them to Tartarus.

I feel like this is more of a writer’s incompetence and need to surprise the audience and subvert expectations rather than something Discord would do.  
I’m pretty sure he was intended to be unrelated to Grogar in the first drafts for this S9 storyline
