For me to really like it, it has to be like real horror. Not just gore or jumpscares. Like, the Gamecube remake of Resident Evil is just scary, and it has maybe only one or two jumpscares in the whole game, with all the good scary parts being really slow and tense. There’s one part where a zombie gets through a door that, instead of just making a jumpscare, they gave this creepy “see what the zombie sees” pov shot instead that’s like a hundred times scarier than a jumpscare. Nothing brings it on either, it just happens when you try to leave the basement :D

I remember watching my cousin play the early Resident Evil games.

It’s something I wish more games would do. Even what the old Resident Evil games did where there were two playable characters with significantly different campaigns and endings :D

I know the endings in Phantasy Star III weren’t massively different and there wasn’t really a bad end to any of them.

I don’t think it’s super common since a lot of people seem to like to 100% games. I think it’s neat to give decisions like that, especially when it’s not a “good ending bad ending” kind of thing, like both decisions have pros and cons :D

One of the other games I remember having choices like that from around that time was Phantasy Star III, which spanned three generations in the game. Admittedly, the game also had a lot of kinks to work out of it. They also had a bit more planned for it, but couldn’t get it all in.

Still, it’s not often you saw a choice like that in an RPG from that era, where the plot actually diverged based on who you picked. Usually there was some way to get both, or characters who couldn’t be recruited were guests like General Leo from FF6, or the characters would be super minor plot-wise and have nothing to do with the story. Like, in Tales of Symphonia you can choose between Zelos or Kratos, but they’re identical save for very minor stat differences that you’ll never notice, and the plot is completely unchanged save for you get like one less scene during the ending credits which involved Zelos (since he dies if you get Kratos). They equip the same stuff, learn the same spells, have the same fighting style, etc :P

Admittedly, there isn’t much of difference between Bianca and Nera/Flora(Bianca has slightly better physical stats, Nera/Flora grows more MP and gets a couple of extra spells). The third girl, Debora, is more of a fighter-mage type. She gets a much better strength stat at the cost of learning less spells.

I did Bianca first, then Flora next. At the time I didn’t realize you could choose, like I thought it was one of those joke choices a lot of games do where no matter what you pick you have to do the one option. I replayed the whole game just to see what the other choice did :D

It depends on what systems you have. Remakes of Dragon Quest VII and VIII are available on the 3DS if you have that system.

I’ve heard the DS remake is better, like they added a whole lot of new stuff. In the original there’s only two women to marry, Bianca or Flora, and they tweaked the battle system a whole lot. Trouble is I don’t have a DS XD
