A Q&A with Big Jim Miller on Twitter revealed that a lot of things were intentionally left vague.  
Many speculated that Luster Dawn was Starlight and Sunburst’s daughter. While Jim doesn’t consider her as such, preferring to see her as an Audience Surrogate, he states that writer Josh Haber does.  
The writers were toying with a subtle nod to the idea of Appledash (Applejack x Rainbow Dash) and Yonabar (Yona x Sandbar) and Fluttercord (Fluttershy x Discord) was canon. Ultimately, they decided to make the moments in question more ambiguous, to allow fans to come to their own conclusions.
