The only truly hard requirement for featured images is that they’re not hidden/spoilered by the “default” filter. Beyond that, everything else is flexible and at the discretion of whatever staff decide to vote for this round.
 
This is a super adorable image, Renderpoint is a good artist who could use some more attention, etc, so we featured it.

I’d prefer a backpack or shoulder strap. She’s not exactly a teacup poodle.

That does kind of suggest to me that something that made it to trending wouldn’t be eligible for a featured image. Then again, it looks like that was written back when the trending images were static and only featured the four most upvoted images in the last three days, and this image didn’t make it quite that high.

I didn’t say anything about it being new, that’s not a concern.
 
My quarrel was that it was my understanding that featured images were ones that could be considered “under-appreciated” and this image was anything but.

Adorable, but I’m concerned about whether or not it should be featured. I always thought the featured image had to be a good, but underappreciated image, this one managed to get itself into the trending images and stay there for a day or two.

We’ll have to find a way to get you past airport security. Pretend to be a stuffed animal for now.
