Rarity can also be considered a beta when talking about someone like Trenderhooves or Blueblood. Spike and Rarity strangely have a bond because they both go for gold.

I don’t know, Spike is adorable for a dragon, (and as implied by the finale, grows up to be handsome.) And who’s to say Rarity isn’t pretty without make-up? And what do looks have to do with their (platonic) relationship?  
Also, it’s been shown Rarity is very nice to him, and doesn’t always treat him as a “slave,” and such.
 
I love Spike, but some fans are a bit too overly-protective of him.
