I remember a (sort of) good ending in a crossover with Nanoha, where they Taste The Rainbow’d the villain of the first season, who went absolutely nuts after the death of her daughter and spent the next forty years talking to her in a tube, physically and emotionally abusing her clone, and trying to get her mitts on a device to grant wishes.
It cured her magic cancer, fixed her mental problems, and she immediately attempted suicide.
By the time the second season rolled around, she’s had to be sedated to keep from stressing herself to death.

I think it would work pretty well if you force empathy on someone for a good enough amount of time I imagine they’d start feeling it even when you take off the forced empathy
