He underestimated the Mane 6, he thought that councouring and hypnotized everypony friends and family in Ponyville is already enough for them.
 
King Sombra just bring down Crystal empire, Canterlot and Ponyville in one day without using the bell. Meanwhile The villain 3 planning the attack for weeks maybe month, and they only managed to divided and concoure Canterlot.

Eh, I guess there are a lot of ways to interpret what happened. To me, it seemed as thus the united power of friendship everyone there provided them gave the Mane Six (plus Spike), the Pillars and the Student Six the power to unleash the final rainbow beam of doom. Thus, while they were the ones who did, they probably couldn’t do it without the help of everyone else.

Remember how Twilight used her friends’ power to amplify her own magic in order to defeat Sombra without the elements…well, having an army there basically achieved the same thing times a hundred. Plus, the Mane Six would have all died if the unicorns shield hadn’t saved them and the Yaks and Changelings hadn’t come in to distract the villains long enough to get to safety.
