Basically. People never gave a flying feather about who to ship who with who, back then and now. I’ve even seen an AU that paired Twilight’s Dad with Applejack’s Mom. Anything is fair game in fanfiction.

The whole point of a background event is to be a background event. They didn’t tweet when they referenced Bioshock and The Big Lebowski. It’s like an Easter Egg in games: developers don’t go tweeting about them.
 
Now, if it was audio commentary track, or “The Making Of”, then it’s fine to say it.
