Headcanon: The Whole thing (the whole of FIM) was an “enchanted” book, just like the enchanted comic Spike had in the Power Ponies episode.  
It’s being read by some “future” pony, a student, who discovers that the enchantments are about to wear off, but gets told by Princess Twilight to go to Ponyville and make some friends…

Easily the single most painful scene I have seen in the show’s entire run. Not because of the visuals, but because of the thinly veiled implications this scene presents. This is a downer ending in disguise.
