And Ocellus was always a forced character. I love her to bits, but she’s a younger Thorax without Thorax’s backstory/character buildup.

That’s actually a good point. Changelings are still new to socializing with other species, so it’s understandable why she’s a li’l timid, and soft spoken.
I think maybe the shy idea is based on the fact on how villainous her kind have been potrayed in the past, thus adapting to the new way of changeling life and attempting to make a good impression in a world that once hated her kind would most likely cause a lot of anxiety.

Joking aside, ironically, aren’t Changelings basically bug-ponies, so actually she’s more “pony” then most of the other characters in the “Student Six” that got to become these squishy toys.

Maybe she was, but she never left and betrayed the hive or tried to make friends which makes her look like a coward. Even when she first appeared in the show she didn’t seem keen on making friends but that’s because she was too shy which rises the question: Why was she portrayed as shy in the first place?
Interesting interpretation, but maybe she was raised similar to Thorax?
Cozy Glow is openly evil and has no problem with it while Ocellus has a troubled past and she always seems to hide it, which annoys me especially since she’s portrayed as the most innocent one of the group.
Either one is possible, we never do see how old the student six actually are nor if changeling aging works differently than ponies. And if not, what sense does it make to not use a character who ‘used to be evil’ and filling her space with a character who is still evil.
Well if we think about it, out of the Student Six, Ocellus is the only one that used to be evil (she was one of Chrysalis’ minions). ;P And plese, don’t even tell me she was born after that.

I remember back when the first season 8 preview pics were released here and people really thought she was some kind of old lady.
And better yet, people seriously considered that she was actually Chrysalis as a “changedling”!
