It’s Latin, literally meaning ‘little scarlet thing’.
…I have no idea. I’m pretty sure it was a joke of some sort, maybe a reference to that “correct names tumblr that called cheerios “bagel seeds” and stuff like that, but I’m not entirely sure what I was thinking.
Brits call Ladybugs Ladybirds
