Well actually, scientifically speaking, because of the way evolution works the egg did come before the chicken. And you could argue that mlp became popular for that exact reason, since that part of the fandom is the most active one. Apogee wasn’t that popular before, and much of Shino’s popularity comes from his NSFW content in the first place, most people found out about her through the fanfics and NSFW images and then stuck around.

That as well, but what usually makes something popular is when MANY artists start doing art of the character. When you have many artistic outlets making a character you may have never seen before, then you’re probably going to look for the source and, oh, what’s this there’s an entire story to it? Even better!
 
This is why good things usually start trending, and when they’re really good, you see a massive BOOM in popularity.
 
Funnily enough, this is the same concept of how memes spread. When enough people understand and create versions of a single meme and share them, it becomes more popular.

This is so easy to debunk it’s not even funny.
 
That kind of material featuring Apogee came AFTER a fair portion of SFW images and pieces were already created of her. She became popular because she was cute, and because humans are the way they are, that sort of material was then created because often humans will have two opinions or desires about something.
 
If what you said was true, then the same thing would have to be applied to MLP itself, which is completely false. The egg doesn’t come before the chicken. What predates the chicken, in this case cute and compelling story-line, gradually develops into what we know as the chicken laying the egg.

I think she is popular because of her greatly developed backstory and also because she is not a static character, she evolves over time with new comic pages, fics, and pics like this. FiM characters also changed over so many seasons.
