My hamster was a delight to play with, and a joy to watch. His death didn’t impact me as a teen the way it would now, I imagine, but I did feel loss.
 
And then, six years later, we found him in the fridge where my dad had put his corpse so it wouldn’t stink. You see, he died in winter, when the ground wasn’t thawed, so we couldn’t bury him at the time.

I know that feeling. My last rat had some kind of stroke or accident that left her barely able to crawl. By the time I realized it, she was extremely dehydrated. I was able to keep her around for about a week by feeding her baby food and giving her water with an eyedropper, and pretty much the entire time my thoughts were like this, wondering if I’d failed her by not noticing sooner.
