It’s the triumphant return of my season 8 episode comics, now dubbed Season 8 Homework Assignments following the season’s school theme! Forgive my tardiness, but now that we have a make-up day today in the Artist Training Grounds, I figured I’d take advantage of it and make the backlog of new episodes I’m accumulating a bit smaller. Expect more to come in about 2 weeks after the event is over. It feels good to be working on these again!
This week’s comic is based on A Matter of Principals. I loved this episode! …Then again, I love every episode with Discord in it. It was neat to see him actually interact with the school for once, in combination with Starlight trying to keep things under control while the Mane 6 are away. It was an interesting setup that came with all the crazy antics I’ve come to expect. Though if Twilight’s school ever was accredited in the first place, it certainly wouldn’t be anymore considering all the disasters that have occurred up to this point.
Just so we’re clear: I’m not criticizing Starlight’s choice of substitute teachers. She was doing the best she could with the situation given to her, and even in spite of all the chaos she had to deal with, I think she performed admirably. And these are not bad ponies either; I love ALL of these characters! But literally no character in the show is without their flaws and quirks, and when I really thought about it, I’m not sure recruiting these 3 was really the “solution to all the school’s problems” that the episode seemed to be implying, even without Discord’s involvement. No matter what, Starlight was fighting an uphill battle; Discord just made it more fun.
Hope you are able to deal with whatever chaos is thrust upon you! Looking forward to… when I’m free to make the next comic, I guess!
The Great and Powerful Trixie, Spitfire, Maud Pie, Discord, Starlight Glimmer, and My Little Pony belong to Hasbro and DHX.

I don’t think the CMCs have gotten enough screen time this season either. They used to be the subplot characters, but now the Young Six are the subplot characters and the CMCs have become minor characters. I’m not sure how I feel about that.
Spike’s been a substitute a couple of times. Outside of that, he seems to be the one in charge of general maintenance as well as Twilight’s assistant as both a head mare and a teacher. Twilight has a stressful position, and someone needs to be there for her so she or the school itself doesn’t fall apart. His job is just as important as anypony else’s.
And the CMC are allegedly tutors, but we really don’t see them do much in affiliation with the school. So I agree that they should have a bigger role.
I’m more surprised at how Fluttershy won for 14 months.
They didn’t think to give Rarity, Pinkie, Applejack or Rainbow Dash a single month?
It’s not just a popularity contest, it’s incredibly biased. Fluttershy won all those times because she’s nice and always brings in animals. That’s why I feel the faculty should have gotten a say in everything. I was kinda disappointed that we didn’t get to see all the classes. (Rarity’s swim class would have bwen nice to watch, and we barely saw any of Applejack or Fluttershy’s classes even with Discord.)
Also I still don’t know why the CMC or Spike can’t be teachers. Or heck, have another episode where the mane six go somewhere and this time, have the CMC as substitutes. I could imagine Scootaloo wearing Rainbow’s whistle and cap and being an amazing PE teacher for example. Someone needs tp draw them as substitute teachers.
Yeah, I agree. I don’t think it really says much about how good teachers they are. That’s why I think it should be Maud, because she was the only one who was actually teaching them something.
Shame that this school’s Teacher of the Month system is just a popularity contest determined by the students, designed to bring down actual hard-working teachers in favor of those that give out the most candy or cute animals or flashy fireworks.
True. Very true. You’ve got a point, Trixie would probably look the most impressive, so probably be voted Teacher of the Month, yeah. Although I’d still say Maud was the best actual teacher, because she did teach the students something.
But none of them prepared a Great and Powerful magic show.
My biggest problem with this episode is if the CMC have mastered the curriculum, why aren’t they allowed to be substitute teachers. I could see Scootaloo standing in for Rainbow Dash and Pinkie, Apple Bloom standing in for Fluttershy and Applejack, and Sweetie Belle standing in for Rarity and Twilight Sparkle.
Also why was Starlight never a teacher if she’s essentially Twilight’s pupil, instead watching Discord’s antics from the sidelines?
I’d say Maud was Teacher of the Month, because although it wasn’t about friendship, she was actually teaching the students something, unlike Trixie and Spitfire.
So glad to meet someone else who wanted to see Dust redeemed. Tbh I normally don’t approve of the villain redemptions unless they partially rdmain a villain or jerk like Discord, but Dusty deserved one. Heck, the original ending had her not kicked out of the Wonderbolts and just worked under Rainbow. It’s sad how people think of her as a sociopath now.
The original ending is probably why Wonderbolts Academy is one of my favourite episodes especially before the changes were made.
Edited
And the Great and Powerful Trixie is teacher of the month.
I still say the mane six are adults though. Maybe they had late growth spurts. I mean Teen!Applejack in Where the Apple lies doesn’t look much bigger than Filly!Applejack.
The wing thing pretty much confirms that Spike is younger than the students…
Spike was confirmed to be a teenager as of S3ish while Twilight was about 10 when she hatched him. I’d say all the mane six in the Equestrian universe anyway, are adults (Big Jim pegged them in their twenties).
That’s what I say
They’re teens unlike the foals Spitfire struggled to teach.
There is where it gets confusing.
How old would you say Twilight was when she hatched Spike?
I guess you could consider the Young Six to be kids. I think they’re actually teens though.
these are not foals so
@BJDazzle
It’s the elite team/academy of ‘The Wonderbolts’ Isn’t it? Isn’t she suppose to be like a commander like who she is?
You HAVE seen how she trains the Wonderbolts, right? She’s strict, and her curriculum is intense. This is the only teaching experience she’s ever had, and I’m not confident she can shift gears for a different audience.
It’s a reference to the comics, Spitfire needed help from Rainbow because she was afraid of talking to some school kids like this.
