I wasn’t disputing that. And I can assure you that it’s completley viable, just less efficient for time reasons and because the method for spinning the yarn isn’t as effective once the cocoon has been cut/broken. That said, I can’t assure you that people who sell Ahimsa silk use the best and most “ethical” practices, but the main point is that it is completley possible to get silk without harming or killing anything.

I’m not going to look into the viability of that scheme. Instead I’m going to point out that to many vegans, this wouldn’t matter. To them, using silkworms at all is the issue. For a similar reason, vegans don’t eat honey even though you don’t slaughter bees to get it.

You don’t have to kill the caterpillars, it’s just more efficient to do so. The silk comes from the cocoon the caterpillars spin, not from the caterpillars themselves, as such you can simply harvest the silk from the cocoon after the caterpillars have metamorphosed into moths (I.E. read moths not butterflies, kind of shows how uninformed you are about all of this) and then process the abandoned cocoon for silk.
 
The reason the caterpillars are killed in mass production is because it’s faster, and thus more cost effective, to simply wait until the cocoon is formed and then harvest it.
 
That said, you are technologically correct. Those caterpillars are going to die, but only because everything dies eventually. There is no requirement to kill anything to harvest silk though, full stop. If you still don’t beleive me then feel free to look up Ahimsa silk.
