An excellent point. Atheism is not believing what cannot be presented with scientific evidence. Celestia is a political leader who visits all her subjects at semi-regular intervals and has a set level of power. Atheists in Equestria would buy that… but question where she came from.

What if Celestia wasn’t a deity? It’s possible.
 
Also, I can see fanon Lyra as an atheist quite easily, with her natural curiosity, skepticism, and apparent love of research.

This image is a great example of a misunderstanding of atheism. It would be silly to deny the existence of Celestia in Equestria. However, I’ve never seen any churches dedicated to her worship. Their versions of religion and atheism would require a lot of imagination.

So it’d be like, just because Thor is battling Loki in front of you, that doesn’t mean you need to suddenly convert to Norse…ism.
 
Reminds me of how Transformers tend to treat Primus and Unicron (i.e. their God and Devil) whenever they appear. They exist, and the Transformers know they exist, but it never seems to affect their society much.

Late to the party (as usual), but I’m gonna agree with d715.
 
My headcanon for MLP-World is that Bonnie Zacherle = the unfathomable Elder God who created the Universe but departed soon after, leaving a series of lesser Gods to create the Worlds, including (eventually) The Fausticorn, who then left her fledgling creation in the hooves of demigods Celestia and Luna.

Personally, I go with something called ‘Flat Earth Atheism’. It’s not the belief that the world is flat, it’s that you really shouldn’t worship a god, even if they’re standing in front of you.

I’m with Maggie. Luna and Celestia are extremely powerful, and perhaps could be regarded as demigods, but I headcanon that the “god” of the pony equivalent of monotheism is the Fausticorn.
