So let me get this straight: Rarity is excited because Spike’s flight allows him to wear dresses of any length. But she was asking him to model a dress before all this happened. So before this episode, Rarity was putting Spike in dresses that fit him. Like, little filly dresses. Canonically.

It’s likely that the deafness is only a part of wild phoenix feathers. Fluttershy was exposed to countless feathers from Philomena and had no adverse effects, but she is domestic and doesn’t live in the normal phoenix wilds where she would develop the possible magic pathogens and resistances to wild microfauna.
 
Either before or after they are made into a dress, I have little doubt Rarity washes them clean.

Given what Rarity went through before this I have to wonder… just who does Rarity hate enough to intentionally make them a dress that is made out of materials that can cause loss of hearing?
