I think both you and HumanGhosts are right, but I love the way you phrased it. It’s so true! The point of Spike’s character is being denied love! It’s so fun to see useless Spike be abused and held to standards that he’s too much of a burden to ever live up to. His abuse is very, very funny to me!!! :)
Conversely, Spike’s schtick is that he’s a nine-year-old who has the work load of a castle full of servants and is constantly berated and even physically humiliated when he fails to live up impossible standards and expectations because he’s compulsively drawn to seek the love/approval of the only creature in the world who he considers family… love and approval that’s often withheld from the child.
I actually am Spike, dude. I’m projecting myself onto myself, because I know myself.
