They did, I think, but not sure how. After the patch, I think, the best way to get experience is not by forging armor or weapons but by making jewelry.

@Zixinus Relevant.
 
My favorite smithing perks remain Ebony, Dragon, and Arcane Smithing. :D Really, it does suck most notably that I need to ditch perk points on Dwarven/Elven and Orcish smithing when I’d literally stop using that armor after 10 hours.

It’s true. Make enough of those suckers, spend a few skill-points and you can make uber-exotic demonic (well, deadric) armor made from foreign ebony that has to be forged in magical fires and needs the heart of a deadra to do.
 
Those things are so spikey that you don’t even need a weapon: just ram yourself at the enemy and they’ll be impaled.
