Flash Sentry is already fed up with people calling it “Waifu Stealer” just because … Flash will fight tirelessly to open everyone’s eyes so that everyone will realize who is the real “Waifu Stealer”.

TBH, Flash getting left behind as a love interest is pretty realistic. In high school, emotional development and relationships are pretty fluid. In fact I kind of resent the way media tends to depict high school sweeties as being soulmates. The more you grow throughout your life, the more chances you have to turn into almost a different person, and kids in high school have a lot of growth ahead of them even from semester to semester.
That’s what happens when you make the practical lowest effort spinoff project to a franchise that, at the time, was starting to try and take itself more seriously.
In fact when you take that spinoff and slowly start to improve on the concepts and characters as the years pass, but then at the same time practically abandon certain characters/concepts. Well, isn’t it expected that at some point those “abandoned” ideas will become the biggest criticisms?
Eh, I see a lot of bronies that genuinely hate Flash all because of that, or at the very least they say so without using the term. (Because I honestly think that using the term seriously is really dumb too.) I get why Flash is disliked, and I do kinda agree with the complaints, I just don’t get why did he get such an intense hatred for being generic. Like I said, there are worse ways to make a bad character. I’d even see otherwise respectful reviewers hate Flash Sentry with a passion more intense than when they’d hate actually badly written characters.
I still think is not a big deal, the first movie wasn’t that much different from a typical high school story if weren’t for the climax, the introduction and the final scene.
After they started to work around EG and make it less cliche, it wouldn’t have hurt if they could give Flash something.
@NicoThePinkUnicorn
I’m just playing it tongue-in-cheek. The phrase “waifu stealer” always makes me snicker. I can’t imagine anybody takes that phrase, at least, seriously.
I think a lot of the Flash flak gets… hold up…. I think a lot of the FLAK that FLASH gets… yeah, that’s it. Is because 1) generic romantic subplots are almost always a shoehorn, 2) disappointment that he doesn’t have much characterization, 3) overall character design is basically “jock who plays guitar,” which is like the grubbiest stereotype for high-school love interest stock characters. So it’s not so much Flash hisself that sets other people off as the fact that he seems low-effort all around.
Double standard I suppose.
Yeah, that is true. Even with the male characters that I love from MLP, I’ll admit that their development doesn’t compare to that of the girls. So Flash being bland isn’t something that’s special to him, buuut because he got shipped with Twilight in two movies (without even being officially boyfriend and girlfriend) then he’s The Worst apparently.
I dare to say that outside of Spike, Discord and maybe Big Mac, none of the male characters has received a great attention or deep characterizations and some of the ones that get it are still relatively one-note. And there’s also Shining Armor, who honestly is not exactly what I’d say the most well rounded or interesting character.
I agree! I don’t really care about Flash Sentry, but I never got all the intense hatred he got just for being a generic love interest. There are much worst things for a character to be. I would’ve liked to see the fandom try and make him interesting just like they were able to do with total background characters.
The worst thing I can say about Flash is that he was at first sadly relegated to generic love interest, and later they tried to give him more characterization while also mocking him for being the unrequited love interest.
Because of this, now I like the character because if you think about it, his fate among the fandom was rather unfair in my opinion.
I don’t see why Flash would piss you off so much for you to want to smack him, when he’s never done anything wrong, but whatever.
@ABronyAccount
See, when Flash steals my waifu, I wanna smack him.
When Sunset steals my waifu, I sincerely wish them the best.
He’s still a waifu stealer, but Sunset is better at it. Like, waaaaay better.
