My perfect situation would have Starlight be Princess Luna’s Student/servant/daughter, and have Sunset be Celestia’s student/servant/daughter, and the two would have a friendly rivalry together.
But, of course, I don’t know if Celestia and Luna would even be in g5

Well, Flutterbat is possible, but there are rumors Princess Luna won’t appear in G5.
Neither might Celestia. Not to mention Derpy.

I just hope Flutterbat will appear in G5 so we can have a blood-mage Fluttershy… That and Celestia since she’s one of my favorite ponies.

I was mostly talking about characterization. Compare G3 Rainbow Dash and G1 Applejack to their G4 counterparts. Fairly different.
And besides, it’s kinda redundant to change/redesign characters out of the blue.
Hasbro is a toy company. They’re going to make new designs to sell new toys. They may keep little parts of previous designs, but they’re not usually gonna repeat a design.

Please stop being so negative… I personally like the idea of a Unicorn Fluttershy, she never flew much anyway so why is her becoming a unicorn such a bad thing, and as for the question of Flutterbat… I doubt you need to be a pegasus to become a bat-pony.
As for Twilight, I think Earth Ponies will be able to use magic, either through verbal incantations, or they channel the power of their Cutie Mark through their body… Either or would work, personally I prefer the idea of incantations, and we do have proof of Earth Ponies using magic in the show
Finally… I really don’t care too much about Pinkie, so whatever happens to her happens, Pegasus Pinkie sounds decent, it’s not like changing her race will change too much in the grand scheme of things… Same for AJ.

The best solution would be to keep the same characters with the same style/species/personalities, but find new settings, open new worlds. G4 gave us a small glimpse of what Equestria has to offer, so why not continue G4 alongside a G5 setting?
G5 ruined some of the mane 6 by turning Twilight into an earth pony, Fluttershy into a unicorn and Pinkie into a pegasus.
Not to mention Applejack being stripped of her “hard worker country farmer gal” personality and turned into a city snob.
Rainbow Dash and Rarity are the only ones i’m OK with. Besides, If G5 comes to pass, the Princesses, Trixie, all the other ponies would be gone except for some key background characters, but those would probably be ruined too.
And one more key factor which is heartbreaking: Derpy might not be included in G5 :(

I have to wonder if the people saying she shouldn’t come back are under the assumption that she’ll be the same character, despite characters like Applejack and Rainbow Dash being different from their previous generation counterparts.
