Certifiably Insane
This is a stretch on my part, but I can honestly see the Sparity ship as a subversion of the Beauty and the Beast trope. We have Rarity, who is acutely aware of how attractive she is and knows how to use it. Then we have Spike, who is afraid of his own true nature.
 
But that’s just me.
