Twilight was probably bullied a lot for her studiousness as a filly, which is probably why she didn’t really regard her friends as actual friends. They, like everyone else, were just obstacles to her ultimate goal of being Celestia’s best student.
 
This, right here, is why Twilight became a shut in. Good thing Celestia pulled the Batman Gambit that she did.
