I vote Fluttershy as the one to get alicorn-ed in G5.

Very true. If they do go down that route, it might be nice to have G5 Twilight specialize in the sort of magic Zecora and Meadowbrook do now in G4. It might be more interesting, too – while I don’t necessarily have any real issue with Twilight’s current “my horn glows and then A Thing happens” type of magic, it’s not really very interesting to see. With Zecora and Meadowbrook, at least, we get to see them busying themselves with beakers and cauldrons and strange ingredients, which is a bit more interesting and at least gives some idea of what is going on.
 
Plus, I think the biggest narrative issue with Twilight’s magic as it is now is that it’s so loosely defined that, insofar as typical plots are concerned, there’s no real reason not to expect her to instantly solve any given problem by making her horn glow and whipping out a spell perfectly suited for the occasion that will likely never be mentioned again. Which, while it’s not the biggest issue in the show by a mile, is still a bit annoying when it happens, and makes it difficult to make believable tension when it’s needed. It seems to me it would be a lot easier to avoid this issue if Twilight’s magic would depend on her having the right ingredients and equipment available when the problem comes up.
 
And in any case, earth ponies and their magic need more love.

If Zecora can still make spells and potions, then I don’t see why an Earth Pony Twilight can’t either.

Might be neat to see Twilight as a master of magic not by innate magical gifts but rather through in-depth knowledge of runes and rituals and the like. An earth pony who can do more with runes & enchantments than most unicorns can do with their horns.

It’s going to be a different Twilight since this show will function as a complete reboot. Just like each of these versions of Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, and Starscream are different characters.

I’m not complaining but I wonder why some of the mane 6 have changed what kind of ponies they are, especially since Twilight was an Alicorn but has now become an Earth Pony. I hope the reason can be justified. Though the designs are overall very good.

I think the G5 unicorn designs for Fluttershy have got to be my favorite G5 designs from these concept art pictures. They already took a pretty character and made her even more graceful and cute.

Speaking of, G5 Pinkie is going to be a Pegasus from the looks of things so it all comes together so to speak.

The comics did play up with the idea of Discord turning her into an Alicorn before.

I like this design. Kind of makes me want to see an episode where they get their species swapped by some curse or a prank by Discord or something. Fluttershy becoming a unicorn, Dash becoming an Earth Pony, Applejack becoming a Pegasus and so forth.
 
Pinkie pie would become an Alicorn Goddess, naturally. _{And then revisit the Mirror Pool.}

Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy are largely based off of Surprise (a pegasus) and Posey (an earth pony) respectively, so it’s absolutely possible
