That suit is amazing and you look great in it.
@MimicKig
i think i get it now. thank you for the cultural insight! :D
so we can’t classify the fazbear crew as kigurumis?
Pretty good poses! And a lot of variety, too, considering how long the video is.
One of my favorite things about Aria is that she’s the meanest of the three, and it really shows in her body language - I think you capture the spirit best in the poses around the 1:30-1:40 minute mark. Key details include the little head tilt (down and off to the side) and shifting her weight so far onto one leg that it just screams, “Try me, I’ll hip check you through a locker.”
Ahh. Didn’t see it.
I’ve talked to Chainer as well. She’s friendly and helped pique me interest in Kig.
I already mentioned I had a few conversations with Chainer, so yea I have seen her work. I would’ve talked more but time zones means she is usually asleep when I am awake and vice versa. My personal favorite is this photo:
@WingbeatPony
I know some cosplayers frown on not doing stuff yourself so that is why I mentioned that.
@TexasUberAlles
I haven’t mentioned that it is also called animegao, meaning animeface. Why the term kigurumi was created? I don’t know. But kigurumi is the more commonly used term among western kigs.
And since we are talking a bit of history it might be intresting to know that the high ratio of men might be related to the time when women were not as privileged as they are now. In theathers males used to preform female roles and sometimes used masks to do so. Does that sound familiar? That is not to say exclusivly practised by men though. I know quite a few female ones too. Who they are is something I am not telling :P
I know right? I really do love their style as well. Their kig was 3d printed and is open source as well :)
She has a pinky/celestia version all using the same base:

Zest’s video
Aria’s posing practise video
Go compare us :D
I just noticed I am sharing other peoples work more then my own. I will get on that soon. I promise ^^

Both of those masks are beautifully made. I feel a bit unsure about which one I prefer too. The one you showed here is a bit more show accurate and the eyes are very well detailed but I’m not too sure how it would look like in motion. I have a feeling that mask, while it looks really beautiful to me in a still image, might skirt the uncanny valley for me if I saw it moving because the eyes are so big and detailed. Mimickig’s mask on the other hand avoids the uncanny valley by a hair for me and I think the smaller eyes might have a part in that (that and his movements were rather cute in this gif so that helps too).
But what makes it special that it’s called as such
“Kigurumi” being the Japanese word for this kind of costume-with-a-facemask, which is especially popular in Japan.
@MimicKig
That Luna costume is baller as buck.
Hey, commissioning a suit isn’t a cop-out. If there’s anything I’ve learned from all my time in fandoms, DIY communities, and making my own stuff, it’s knowing when not to do something yourself! And no sweat on the stylistic choice for the eyes, either. It does suit the overall design, and the unsolicited opinion of some guy on the Internet has no bearing on it. If it’s what you were going for, then it’s what you were going for, y’know?
Enjoy your stay, and I look forward to seeing more!
OMG those adorable Luna and Twi.
BTW, you should see ChainerPrime’s AJ Kigs. They’re really good.
Thanks for that comment, that definitely saved some time for me. I am not an expert but as far as I can tell the limit of what is a “true” kigurumi is still a bit up for debate.
My personal definition is a “a cosplay of a (anime) character that uses a skinthight bodysuit and a hard mask”. Off course this definition is still flawed, but it is as close as I got. ^^
I commisioned the suit. I know, how lazy of me. I was involved in the design process but the mask and suit were made by GouKaOu Kigurumi studios. As for the removal of the makeup… I decided to leave it out to give the mask a bit more of a sleek design. Was it a bad choice? Maybe. But that is what designers interpertation is for. :)
And that Zest mask is the reason I posted here in the first place. I figured some members might already be familiar with the style. And I have been talking to the apple jack kigurumi. A really nice person imo.
There is another one in ’murica:
And there is this twilight:
@Phoenixflambe
It is a subset. It is still a costume, just a specific kind of costume. Just like how you say “Mascot costume” or “morph suit”. It is a name given to all the costumes with a similar style.
@Nittany Discord
Will do. I have been posting stuff on other platforms already, but I don’t want to flood this site. I’ll see what I will upload. ;)
To everyone else, thanks. I’d make my post unnecessarily long if I’d reply to you all individually, but I appreciate the comments.
Edited because: fixed image
It looks like they tried to make the eyes more EQG-styled, and to be honest now I’m not sure where my preference lies. Mimic’s mask is a lot more professional-looking and has cleaner lines, but the Lemon Zest one has more depth to the eyes (albeit rough) and the show-accurate pupils might provide more visibility. YMMV on the uncanny valley, though.
There’s also two prevailing styles. What you’ll sometimes see is the style that looks like a baggy set of pajamas, animal-themed or otherwise. It’s where the term comes from - “kiru” (to wear) and “nuigurumi” (stuffed animal/stuffed toy). I think I’ve seen a few Rainbow Dash suits of this style, they’re officially licensed halloween costumes!
The other style, seen here, features realistic clothes, wig, etc. but also a mask and zentai-type spandex suit to create an even skin tone, and is meant to evoke the look of cel-shaded animation. These are more typically human anime characters, though you’ll occasionally see anthro in this style (I’ve personally seen a few at furry conventions, and there’s at least one pony cosplayer doing this.)
To the best of my knowledge, “kigurumi” isn’t a blanket term for any sort of mascot suit, costume, or fursuit, but since I’m approaching the subject from the outside I don’t know the Japanese words nor the cultural distinctions for the rest of all that. It’s definitely something I’d like to know more about.
Perhaps it would be that costumes are just clothing, but kigurumis also use the skin or fur of a character, especially for anime characters. Another term for kigurumis that represent animals is “fursuits”.
But what makes it special that it’s called as such and not just simply referred to as “costumes”?
A costume that covers the whole body, usually involving an animal or a human(oid).
whats kigurumi?

Really great work on the outfit and the wig!
I’ve always wondered about the masks in kigurumi. How many base mask options are there, or did you scratchbuild the mask yourself? If the eye shape is predetermined (beyond the obvious need to place them for visibility), I’d say you did a pretty good job choosing an expression for Aria. I just think it’s missing the eyeshadow and thick eyeliner that really sells the eyes as being hers.
