He entered a cosplay contest of himself and lost because somehow the judges deemed that his true form didn’t look as good as that pony’s costume.

The same thing almost happened to John de Lance. They created the role based on his performance of the Star Trek character, did the casting call, and almost picked someone else. Someone caught it and made sure he got the part.
