I headcanon that Nightmare Moon, King Sombra, Sunset Demon, Nightmare Rarity, Midnight Sparkle, and Daybreaker were possessive alter egos of a similar type of malice as the PoS.

Well the original tale we heard of the PoS is that it was a remaining fragment of NMM. Wonder if there really is a connection between the two or if that detail got dropped.

Something tells me that the same force that empowered Stygian was the one that turned Luna to Nightmare Moon. It makes sense if the shadow desired eternal darkness, doesn’t it? I have a feeling we’ll be revisiting that place underneath Hollow Shades in the next season; it seems there’s a powerful, ancient dark force that dwells within Equestria.
