Well more specifically she said he didn’t understand friendship the way Twilight did. He clearly still valued friendship (he helped create the Elements of Harmony after all), but was also prideful and too quick to judge intentions in others.

Back in MMC, Celestia said that Starswirl never truly understood the magic of friendship. So I was expecting him to be a major jerk that Twilight was blindly idolizing.

Poor Twilight certainly made an epic bad first impression. As much as I felt for her I had to admit I also loved that the writers had the guts to have Starswirl be so pissed off at and unimpressed with her for so much of the episode.
