The phenomenon of trees conjoining themselves does happen in nature.  
It’s called Inosculation  
Sometimes called “Husband and wife” trees

I just realized that this is another instance where we see what Earth Pony magic is capable of.  
This tree is the result of it.

First season was “Twilight learns lessons about friendship”. Season 2 was “Everyone learns lessons about friendship.” Season 3 was “The mane cast starts to actually achieve things”

I’d say the third season had a theme of Twilight maturing in preparation for her assuming the role of alicorn/princess, but I realize it’s a subtle thread open for interpretation.

This is definitely one of the best episodes they’ve ever made, it’s the only one that made me legit cry. My only complaint is the scene with them as foals, as they’re way too young and should look like colts and fillies, but other than that it was perfect.

This reminds me of Uzumaki when the lovers twisted up like snakes and went into the ocean.

I’m just going to point out that those little details (the overgrowth) , all examples of “show, don’t tell” , is why MLP is still amazingly created. They could have said “Oh, yeah, way out by the parts of the orchard we no longer tend to…” but instead just the establishing shot here speaks more than enough than words can. It was something that didn’t need to be said, but gave reason why Granny never knew of it (and likely the other Apples until that day, after checking out all the stories)
