Description

“Foxy” Connie C. Dart is a simple plone. She has her pond, her ducks, her high visibility paint scheme, & even more ducks & she’s as happy as a plone can be. Built by Convair Equestria in 1955, Connie is the only Sea Dart built outside the United States. Like the other Sea Darts, Connie was intended to serve as a naval fighter aircraft in the days of short, straight deck aircraft carriers before the advent of the steam catapult, back when take-off rolls were absurd & approach speeds were high. But like the rest of the Sea Darts “Foxy” Connie was soon rendered essentially useless by new carriers that could accommodate jet fighters with little to no trouble. She was officially struck from the ERN’s active roster in 1960. She was acquired by a private buyer & restored to flying condition in 1988.

By the way, if you want to make my plones look like… not s(yay)t, feel free to do so. Just post a comment or link to the original if you do. Please.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Sea Darts were wonderful planes in their day, still the only supersonic seaplanes. But it wasn’t just the improvement of aircraft carrier technology that made them an answer in search of a question. The bigger problem is that islands don’t contain natural supplies of jet fuel and spare parts. Or usually even adequate food for an airbase. So while you could put a Sea Dart squadron’s minimal launching facilities on enough islands to cover the Pacific much cheaper than building a bunch of aircraft carriers and their escort ships, you still needed to supply those islands. Which meant a whole lot of Sea Darts, a whole lot of airbase crews to maintain them, a whole lot of freighters and tankers, and even more escort ships to protect the supply ships. So overall, making enough Sea Darts and convoys of supply ships to cover all the US commitments in the Pacific turned out to be at least as expensive as a few carrier battle groups, which could go to whatever areas needed coverage at the moment.
