Oh wow, this is worse than scrapping the idea of the first physical appearance of Scorpan and the potential fight scene between the hippogriffs and the villainous henchman, another golden opportunity thrown straight into the garbage.
I bet that “someone” was Megan McCarthy, considering she’s the one who wrote Equestira Girls.

Oh they were going to:
But I’m willing to bet the same person who said “lol make him a dog” had the sayso of making him a beach ball.
Late as this reply is, while that isn’t a bad idea I’m more interested of the idea of Spike being a sea dragon, specifically the leafy sea dragon;
While the seaponies and mermares are a reference to seahorses and hippocampus, a sea dragon would be more fitting for Spike. While sea dragons are usually common in Australia, seahorses are often tied to dragons in Japanese mythology. The Japanese word for seahorse is “tatsu-no-otoshigo” meaning “dragon’s child”. It’s stated in Japanese mythology that seahorses turn into dragons over a century and that in some legends that seahorses are baby dragons, like Spike. Sea dragons are also related to seahorses and could also reference how Spike has been living among ponies his entire life.
And instead of breathing fire, as a sea dragon Spike would breath forms of water whether they’re jets of water or bubbles. Now while I get that his name is “Spike”, the idea of him being a pufferfish makes absolutely no sense and Hasbro is reminding us that Spike is the still the butt monkey of MLP and is given such a form for the sake of a lame pun, and with Hasbro being a toy company this is another attempt to promote the series based on a company that sells toys and merchandise.
Once again I feel the information of dragons is very lacking and one-sided.
Yeah, so “whatever fish she would be”, I guess. :)
That would just be an insult to her character. Just like how Spike the Pufferfish is an insult to Spike’s character.
Thanks. I see him as a lot of potential that often isn’t capitalized on.
Though I’m sure anyone who has a favorite apart from the 6 feels that way about their favorite character, though Spike gets used as a pratfall machine, moreso since the end of season 2 and only recently has he gotten any limelight to do the right things (last minute of equestria games, gauntlet of fire, and time are a changeling).
I do like his interactions with Starlight since she enables Spike to perform his normal role of being a grounding force for someone who can’t see the forest for the trees.
BTW, nice user icon. It’s nice to see someone cares about Spike as much as I do.
no, i’m pretty sure that’s how it’s gonna go. He’s not going to play any important parts for the story, certainly not going to be important in the water, and might do something slightly silly to “one up” Storm King’s stitch ripoff.
But, meh, it’s called “my little pony”. He’s always been second fiddle and a pratfall item.

Now that I think about it, he’s probably gonna just serve as the comic relief for the entire film. I just hope my suspicions are wrong.
Possibly. Also most likely squeezing in a woopie cushion joke when he deflates.
Probably also so they could rip off a guppy joke from the little mermaid.
Aww, thanks.
Sadly, 10 bits says they made him a puffer fish just so they could have the inflation joke when he panics/is scared (and will probably be used as some sort of beach ball).
Awwwww, now something like that would have worked so much better! Honestly, Hasbro needs guys like you on the team!
10/10 argumentation
@Daneasaur
Ah okay.It indeed look more reptilian than a pufferfish.Take note LunaLover
Only in the “realistic” sense. I’ve seen plenty of toony versions of dragon eels and it’d be a stealth way to make him look like an eastern dragon.
It’s also less stupid then a pufferfish!
That’s less cute than a pufferfish TBH
I mean, a Pufferfish is a face with fins.
At least an eel can be somewhat cute while also being a notable danger AND be pretty.
Heck, one of them is the Dragon Eel and it has spikes over it’s eyes.
I wanna see an artist make Spike into one of those.
I’m not either. At this point, he doesn’t even look like a pufferfish, he looks like a guppy that ate too much.
@PonyPon
I know! It looks the artists just photoshopped an image of Spike and got this!
It’s the mane 6 except they added fish tails.See,i can do the same thing
And since he’s an infant,that’s why they chose a tiny fish and not,for example,a shark
I think was just easier to make him a pufferfish because of his short, pudgy and spikey appearance.
