Description

Think I got most of the layout ideas out my head and will get back to inking, coloring and scripting fiction for the weekend.

Did an earlier NamixRarity image with Nami in Formal attire but wanted to bring in Rarity’s “Drama Couch” for this one but doubled up for Nami.

Went with a surly look and feminine wiles to get their mutual admirers, Sanji and Spike, to wait on their hand and hoof (not very hard) and take inventory of their treasure. Thought bubble reveal their true expression of joy.

Nami, Sanji are characters of One Piece @ Echiiro Oda

Rarity, Spike are characters of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic @ Hasbro

Had a discussion the subject of Nami in comparison to other greedy individual and while she does a number of things for money, she never hesitating on using the wealth she acquired to help others in terms of generous without profiting in return so pairing up with Rarity that represents Generousity is a trait Nami does have. The greed or accumulation of wealth is do to the fact that she was helpless of helping her mother/village in need. Some people point out that Nami is greedy but usually she uses it to help others and forsake money in the of friendship. In the end both are capable of acting selfish/greedy (mostly for show) but they are have shown great compassion and generous natures.

Acts of Generousity of Nami:
Building funds to buy her home island from Arlong.
Forsaking the reward in helping Vivi (although she did cry about)
Putting funds away to repair the ship (before the water 7 arc)
Gave the money stolen from Thriller Bark to Lola without hesitation.
And was willing to spend all her saving to buy Camie the mermaid freedom in the human auction house.

Yeah think we are done here.

About that last part on the 1st paragraph, I thought we both agreed on that since the start of the discussion.

And while selfish can evolve into greed, it doesn’t mean it has to. And I don’t think that “MINE”! phrase reflects anything other than “she has been discorded and is now greedy”. Discord didn’t change them because of some hidden trait, she changed them to be the opposite of what they truly are. Also, quite some people would turn out like Nami given her circumstances, no point in making a special case out of Rarity.

End of discussion?

I still call out that discord has twisted aspects in their personalities that exists within them and put them into extremes, Rarity’s “Mine!” Phase that deep down she could be greedy deep in her subconscious, she just never acted on it or just never been placed in the situation like Nami has. Nami had to be greedy for sake of helping her village and that instinct has been ingrained into her personality but over time time she rarely show greedy or selfish tendencies. More or less, they both have a self-center personality if that would just end this topic, self-center and apparently superficial but deep down wish the best for their friends and wishes to support them.

Research shows that selfishness can grow into greed so yeah, If rarity can be considered selfish at times (which she showed as envy or jealousy toward Fluttershy’ modeling) can grow into greed which Nami is. However Nami has not been known for been selfish, which can contradict her greed, (collecting money for reason outside herself). So is it possible, that they are not greedy at not but more complex characteristics for doing the things they do?

And can you say that Rarity is addicted to them, or has some insatiable hunger that leads her to hoarding? You yourself said it, there is a line between plain want and outright greed, but can you say that Rarity has crossed it?

Regardless of the various parallels between her and Nami, Nami is greedy and has a whole backstory that explains why. Rarity only has a scene from the first season.

And of course we’re not going anywhere if we’re not willing to say what we agree or disagree with. I can say that I don’t find Rarity greedy, and if she indeed had one greedy moment, that alone doesn’t define her personality.

*greed stems more than monetary value… I mean.

Just because they have dollar signs in their does mean they are greedy, Iron will had the same look, does that means he’s greedy or just the sign of profiting?

Being a business pony, Rarity could should a sign of profiting as well.

But now I digress, will focus on the positive aspects of Nami and rarity.

Greed does stem from just value, it grows from addiction, insatiable hunger, and want. Selfish and greed differ but selfish can grow into greed. Both are still viewed a negative aspects. I had raised other aspects of Nami and Rarity that they have in common outside the “greed” aspect. We can go back and forth on this subject but we are not going to see eye to eye on this. The debate was interesting but have no longer any desire to repeat or further define the viewpoints.

^To clarify the first part: Nami has a reason to want to accumulate money and not spend as much, but that isn’t the case with Rarity. That’s what I meant.

A what is the level of greed in liking gems? Nami has a reason to want money because of her childhood, but not Rarity. She likes gems because they are pretty, and prettyfying is basically her talent, no mention of their monetary value here. You’re saying that Discord took advantage of some inner greed she previously had, and I fail to see that. To me it looked like he twisted her love of gems into greed (much like how he twisted Pinkie’s insecurities into grumpiness).

We have different views on Rarity, that is a fact, and we can both agree to disagree. The fact is rarity does have a liking to jewels as does Nami, whenever what level of greed each has is up to the viewer, Nami came from a poor childhood and knows what hardships people go through which is embedded her need for money (buying her island back from Arlong). We could go back and forth on if Discord he completely changed the MLP personalities or simply exposed their quirks to an extreme degree. I find that the excuse “the devil (discord) made me do it” is a weaker excuse rather then “giving in to temptation/impulses”.

Just as it bugs you that Rarity accused as Greedy, it bothers me as well that Nami is only labelled as greedy as well as her only personality description, when she has proven as a talented navigator and mapmaker, keeping the financials in mind due to ship repairs, and being extremely resourceful (have be that way, since becoming a thief at age 8). She has several qualities comparable to Rarity outside of the “greedy” title. It’s just their life choices and situations differ.

Had a convo with a friend about this, we both agreed that Rarity and Nami are far more generous than Lina Inverse (Slayers), Nabiki Tendo (Ranma 1/2), Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop), and Fujiko Mine (Lupin the Third).

You’re mixing selfishness with greed. She’s well aware of her self-centered attitude (though that’s mostly dramatics). In the other cases, Discord talked to them to weaken them somewhat before doing his mind tricks. With Rarity he basically showed her a wall with her Cutie Mark on it and mind-tricked her into greediness.

And the only reason Rarity gives to want the gems is because they are pretty. She was either gonna keep a few or use them in her dresses as decoration, but she wasn’t trying to get rich. What else would you have expected? She has a clear affinity for gems and they were driving the dragon out of the cave anyways, trying to get some is hardly a crime. She even tried to reason with the dragon about it.

Outside of “mind raping” Fluttershy, (did it in a way since he could not trick her or tempt her like the others), Discord played on Pinkie’s insecurities (friends laughing at her than with her), Applejack’s dealing with hard truths (lying to avoid dealing with it), Rainbow Dash’s loyalties to the group (tricking her that her home was in trouble), he tempted Rarity’s with her inner greed (not that she shows it often but she has an “all about me” mentally at shows at times, she’s not over the top with that mentally but it is recognizable and she is aware of this aspect). Since she able to recognize this quirk, it’s not extreme like other characters on the show, Diamond Dogs, Trixie, or Diamond Tiara. But if there is a chance of cashing in on gems, she would be the first to capitalize on it (she did fail in charming the dragon by focusing on the treasure rather than completing the mission).

Overall, the Nami x Rarity is mostly set not due to be greedy but using their charms to get admirers (Spike and Sanji), both can be drama queens (overreacting), and having a love for treasure and jewels (which do take a backseat when dealing with their respective friends).
Background Pony #8CC7
Discord made her greedy, just like how he made Fluttershy bad just by touching her. In fact, after being hypnotized, Rarity tried to fight back, which says something.

She was selfish with Sweetie (though Sweetie didn’t help matters much by screwing things up), but afterwards she did everything to fix things up. This doesn’t have anything to do with greed at all.

It would have been selfish if she hasn’t cared about Spike, but she did. That’s why she did’t press the issue further and was taken aback when he offered it. I don’t find anything wrong with Rarity liking a gem.

While Rarity has been known for her generous nature (more than Nami) there are instances she has been greedy or selfish, Discord’s mind tricks placed her inner greed for “Tom”, her behavior with her sister, Sweetie Belle on doing things she wanted to do, and although Spike willingly gave her the jewel he has been saving, it was a bit selfish on her part for wanting something that he was saving for on a special occasion.

Some fans have been harsh on Nami for her greed but there were instance of her being the more compassionate and emotional of her friends, helping Vivi to get home, helping Asira in Skypiea island and welcoming Usopp back during the Water 7 arc, also giving the treasure she stole in Thriller Back to Lola and her pirate crew for their help.
Background Pony #8CC7
One thing that bugs me, though. Rarity wanted to get a Dragon’s jewelry once (nevermind that it was never hinted that she wanted them for their monetary value), and she’s instantly labelled as greedy.

I tried not to make it too complicated that one doesn’t need to about both shows…

Crossover theme
  1. female that loves money, jewels, treasure
  2. has a male admirer that would nearly anything for her
  3. uses feminine charms to exploit situations to her advantage
  4. Can be greedy a number of times, but is usually has a kinder personality

Most done this for those who knows about One Piece characters as well as MLP.

Spike, watch Sanji closely. You can learn a lot from this guy if his fangirls are to be believed.

Also, Rarity x Nami = OTP. is a sick puppy in various respects XD
