I don’t know. The fact that the changelings as a whole have only showed up in two episodes (was Canterlor Wedding two episodes?) so there’s not exactly a ton of stuff to go by in the show, and I don’t hold the cannon of the comics as completely connected to that of the show.
 
And it’s kinda clear that Chrysalis is supposed to be their Queen Mother (quite literally), I really don’t think she’d manipulate her children like that.

This is, I think, the most accurate reasoning thus far. Chrysalis took the changeling’s need for love and twisted it through her own need for power, conquest, etc. It could even be that the new changelings were the original changelings (what the changelings are supposed to be), but Chrysalis took power some time long ago and corrupted her species over the (decades? centuries?) to become vampire-esque creatures that steal instead of share. A corrupt form not unlike what Nightmare Moon is for Luna. Only difference being that an outside evil (Chrysalis) corrupted the drones, rather than themselves (as in Luna’s case)

Well the changelings did kind of attack their cities and kidnap their royalty. That, the changelings being intimidating, and ruled by a tyrannical dictator probably didn’t do diplomatic relations any favours.
 
Now that things have changed, I can almost guarantee we’re going to get an episode about the diplomatic relationship between Equestria and the new changelings.

This is something I find to be really funny and all, but it’s a really good question that I think leaves a giant gaping plot hole in the series.
 
Why couldn’t/can’t the ponies of Equestria give love to the changelings? And that’s where the giant plot hole shows up.
 
 
I mean the changelings need to survive, and I’m pretty sure that if the love is given willingly that it won’t turn the ponies into husks or anything. But the ponies are all like “hell nah”, even though there’s supposed to be more love in Equestria than anywhere else.
 
That makes the ponies of Equestria look kinda racist if you ask me.

Honestly it always seemed to me as if Chrysalis simply went on a power trip as her plan started working. Very much a ‘we’re winning… maybe we should try for more!’ thing - which ultimately led to her plan ending up nothing like it was originally intended to be.

This should have been how the episode ended, not with (true?)love somehow defeating…love-crazy monsters….

The fighting was the weirdest thing about that episode with the changelings.
 
Changeling 1: “We feed off of your LOVE!”
