It is more common than you think. And in fact mares are more likely to do so than stallions. I think they rarely eat meat because they don’t feel an instinctive need to do so. They are confirmed to eat dairy and eggs.

My headcanon, which is based solely on what I’ve seen Pinkie baking, and on Flutterbutter’s willingness to catch fish for her animal friends, is that ponies are in at least some instances willing to eat eggs, dairy products, and seafood, but nothing else.

I know there’s a video going around the Internet of a horse chasing a baby chick across the pasture and then NOM! but that seemed a bit unusual.
