I imagine the erosion from the motion of the sea would muck up the canal. It’s already quite the project to keep dredged deep enough for continued use.

Oooooooh, don’t you start. I actually know the world pretty well. Even better than plenty of pretty smart people I know. Cambodia, jungle, come on, gimme a break. And I really did know about Panama. How else would the Panama canal work if it wasn’t at that narrow neck of land? I even know it actually runs Northwest/southeast, despite the pacific being on the west side of the Americas and Atlantic on the east, thanks to how the little bridge of land swerves. And that the canal runs through lakes, using some really neat water lock systems to adjust for different water levels.
…I wonder what’d happen if that opened all of them at once? Like, okay, the lakes would empty into the oceans, but I mean if the canal were lower - make a straight canal connecting the two oceans that actually usually sit at different levels…
I think you’d just get really strong currents running through it as the water tries to move to equilibrium but friction with the sea floor keeps it from really achieving equilibrium as fast as tides move things around.
Seriously, though, I did know at least that Panama is central America instead of South America. Buuuuut it’s kinda close? YeahIdunnothat’soffensiveorsomething. Whateves.
