It was written to be the origin of the G1 Twinkle Eyed Ponies who had gem-looking eyes. Turns out it’s because a freaking explosion drove magic gems into their friggin’ eye sockets after they went blind due to ages of slavery in a mine at the hands of an evil wizard. But don’t worry, Applejack killed him to death and the ponies lived happily ever after.
