Gurren Lagann is more than inspired. More than half the show is a reference to something and the whole thing is just a big homage to mecha anime.

Even Gurren Lagann itself is a design picked up from an old show.
Nothing less to expect from old GAINAX, a studio built of obsessive anime fans.
