Truth be told, an underhand gesture is a signal of submission and will apply to most beings, even humans. It serves as a good way to show you are not a threat.
 
The changeling is also giving a similar gesture by having the head and ears down. The reason some folks associate this with “a dog that will bite” is due to the fact that the dog is scared and thinks it will be harmed in some way.
