Actully some fans have noted how versions of him would be far more dangerous if not for his ego, he’s not really a wimp just that he doesn’t make any contingency plans or anything because his ego gets in the way and he thinks it can’t fail as it’‘s his plan, and so when his plans do fail he gets scared as he has no idea what to do.  
I mean he is one of the most cunning Deceptacons but it’s hard to tell with all the ego trips he goes on.  
Without his ego getting in the way his cunning alone would make him one of THE most dangerous bots.  
So taking out three predacons if he put his mind to work and didn’t think of how great he is every few second would be somthing he can do.

True, just that he was facing down 3 predacons, one of whom had made it abundantly clear he wanted to kill Starscream the next time they met.
 
Plus as a more meta point, Starscream almost always dies at some point in each continuity - killed by Galvatron, blown up by Ratchet in the original comics. Suicides against Unicron in armada, killed by Sam in the movies.

But Prime Starscream never said to have died.

Oh Starscream, even dying is too hard for you to do.

I wouldn’t worry, Rainbow Dash. After all, he may be back, but he’s also still Starscream.

Heck, King Koopa’s been dumped in lava tons of times, (and once a firey star/sun) and still comes back.

OMG STARSCREAM! I can’t wait for the next season.
 
And in every series it’s hard to make Starscream stay dead.
