Hehe, yeah.
But yeah, they're not really acting more intelligent than real fish in this episode. Meanwhile cats, owls, and even mice show signs of some sapience.
Mice have had little nuclear families and pushed a wheelchair, as well as being intelligent enough to understand Fluttershy in A Bird in the Hoof.
So fish aren't really any more fridge horror to eat here than IRL.
Though somehow I imagine killing those fish was a bit less gruesome in cartoon land than IRL.
