Speaking Fancy - For helping with translations

Rough translation.
Title: Difference
  1. “This time we were camping with everyone. That was fun!
    I am like this now thanks to you. I’m really grateful.”
  2. “All this is the gift of your efforts. As for me, I think about you with pride.”
    TS: Ah… Sunset became such a good girl.
  3. TS:To compare…
    SS: “It’s a joke. A joke.”, “You told me to make friends.”
    TS: Starlight treats me with disrespect.
  4. TS: Looks like she, like Sunset, needs some beating to understand it, after all…
    SS: Try, if you can.

If I may, in panel 1 Sunset says, “Tanoshimi” (楽しみ), which is roughly, “I’m looking forward to it.” So they’re going to go camping rather than have already gone camping.

And I’d have gone with something slightly more threatening or defiant for Starlight’s final line “Yarerumonnara yatteminasaiyo” (やれるもんならやってみなさいよ). A literal translation would be, “if it’s something that can be done, try and see”, so maybe something like, “If you think you can do it, bring it on.”

You said mental issues, so I took that for what it’s worth. I have a theory that Sunset was a genuine sociopath, a person who cannot feel empathy, until the Elements gave it to here. It accounts for her cruel behaviour, and makes her crying and sorrow make sense. Imagine if you did untold amount of bad things to people for your own gain and didn’t feel bad about it, and in an instant, an entire life’s worth of self-hatred and guilt crashed down on you, with a slew of other emotions like regret and sadness.
Sunset is better now. She learned to accept who she was and understand that it isn’t who she is now. I find the fact that she found this out through self-reflection and personal exploration very appealing and inspirational, as some of our most defining moments are the ones when we are most alone.

I will admit I am biased towards Starlight, and haven’t given her the chance she deserves. I still dislike her, she annoys me.

Having a panic attack doesn’t make you mentally unsound. If it did, half of everyone would be. Starlight is just confused and socially stupid.

I never claimed Sunset had it easier.

Plus, she’s better now, isn’t she? She was still beating herself up over what happened, but it’s an incredible improvement to before.

Now look back at how Starlight reacted at the idea of having to meet Sunburst again. She had a panic attack, complete with tunnel vision and ringing in her ear. Starlight isn’t mentally sound yet.

@Starswirl
What? Sunset has had way worse than Starlight. Sunset hated everyone and never even had a single friend until Twilight came, Starlight at least had one.
Sunset was a textbook sociopath, bordering psychopath (in Satan form), until the Elements helped her. Starlight was just misguided and needed someone to show her the way.

Sunset had run away to another world and managed to take a school over not with her most valuable tool, magic, but through intimidation and viciousness. Starlight used manipulation and magic, but thought she was doing the right thing. Sunset was incredibly self serving, however, and longed for revenge and enslaved an entire school and likely more given the chance.
Starlight didn’t even understand the gravity her revenge was doing to the world, all she wanted was personal vengeance against someone else. Sunset hated Celestia and other ponies so much she used anyone she could to take over everything.
Starlight was like a mad child with a gun(her impressive magic) who was acting out, Sunset was far more diabolical all on her own.

Well, there’s one key difference between Starlight and Sunset—Starlight has issues. Mental ones. I think, out of all of Twilight Sparkle’s shadow archetypes, she’s the only one who shares this problem with Twilight. And that’s why she needs constant guidance.

I really like Sunset, but I don’t want her to remain in limbo in Equestria Girls. Now that she is a leader, what is she going to learn? How to lead effectively? Maybe but I just wish she would go back someday, not even become part of the regular cast like Starlight is trying, but more like Maud. Sunset finds her own identity in Equestria like she did in the Human world, her own adventures with her own friends. Who knows, maybe the EQG Humane 5 can join her sometime for an adventure or two…

Eh, we all have our likes and dislikes. Like how I dislike Discord and his redemption. shivers Yeah, we can’t always be happy, but it’s turned out some good tidings such as the season 4 finale {even if I’m not exactly a fan of the ending montage.} and Make New Friends but Keep Discord.

As well, I prefer to keep a more ‘positive’ outlook on life and the show. It sometimes feels like optimism isn’t used regularly enough. So no hard feelings, cause I think you’re a pretty alright guy yourself.

@Evowizard25
Oh well. You like something I don’t like, no biggie. I ain’t gonna make a big deal of it because I actually think you’re a pretty swell guy. The only thing we seem to disagree on is starlight and even I admit that most of my initial fears reguarding her have so far proven unfounded.

This show needs more optimists in the fandom and I ain’t gonna try and ruin your enjoyment of a show that I myself care about because of one different opinion.

@Mr grump
I didn’t let my fondness for her cloud my judgement. I’ve actually taken the time to distance myself and analyze the episode and how it came about and I’ve always come back to the conclusion that it was brilliant. I’ve spent hours going over and over it, so yeah, it’s not ‘clouded’ perception.

@whitestar60
Well, with the main six, I’m not surprised since they’ve learned to be nicer to reformed villains. {Discord’s betrayal as an example.} I rather liked the montage, though, I do kind of wish we got an episode about her returning to the town. Would have made for a great episode.
whitestar60

@Evowizard25
Can we at least agree that the forgiveness montage was terrible idea?
At minimum we could have had 5 episodes where Starlight had to win over each of the mane 6 plus another with her making amends to her victims, maybe even a two parter.

Everything he said was spot on, actually. I can see how it might be heartwarming to some but well paced and believeable? What? Look, there’s nothing wrong with liking starlight but don’t let your fondness for her colour your perception of what is a badly thought out and rushed ending to an otherwise great season finale.
Evowizard25

@whitestar60
That’s not how it happened. I can honestly say that since I’ve watched that episode a number of times. It was well placed, believable, and downright heartwarming and I’ve already gone over this several times in the past so it’s tiring to have to explain again.

I’ll agree Sunset’s redemption was done well, just wary to point it out since well, if you’ve read my other comment, I’m easily influenced on pitiful and redeemed characters.
I’ll see how Starlight turns out when I get there, (probably a long time since I watch it with my sister and we’re only on Canterlot Boutique now) but I’m looking forward The Cutie Re-Mark and Season 6.

@VNagato
Rainbow Rocks handled Sunset’s redemption wonderfully. The majority of the school still hated her for what she did, even those who where wiling to offer her friendship had doubts that she wouldn’t just betray them and go all she-demon (the “no offense”s driving that point home) When Twilight comes out of the portal and Sunset offers her hand even the newly minted princess of friendship hesitates. The Villains even take time out to mock her on how much no one trusts her. But in the she pushes through the hate, the doubt and distrusts, rallies our heroines and earns her happy ending (“You’re never gonna break me down” indeed).
Starlight, on the other hand (or hoof), did nothing but cry and apparently is instantly forgiven by everyone she kidnapped, held hostage, stole cutie marks from and whose wills she broke. That last one may explain the the Equal Village forgiving her instantly actually.

I admit if that’s the case, then I’ll be looking forward to her character even more when I get there.
My only problem is how I’m gonna take it how a villain who seems to honestly thinks what they’re doing is right, to wanting to change their ways in a split second instead of a slow realization of it.

@VNagato
Starlight will always be missing something if she’s trying to be Sunset or Discord 2.0
Thank goodness it’s not the case. Although, reformed Starlight has something Sunset doesn’t have–the willingness to really challenge Twilight, to actually disagree with her. Which is what the comic OP posted is about.

I’m in the middle of season 5, but from I see how the fandom is reacting, I feel like Starlight is missing something which is why a portion of the fandom liked her as a villain but hate her reformed. I feel like some pitiful emotion is missing? Again, I don’t know for sure, but from what I’ve heard about her backstory, it’s not a good one.

I hated Sunset Shimmer in EQG1, and I literally groaned out loud when I heard she was going to be important in RR. I’m not kidding when I say I hated her, I treated the first movie like it was shit forced down my throat. Then we see in RR how everyone treats her, which is normal and to be expected for how many years she’s been like that, but I felt bad for her. Maybe I’m way to easily influenced by pity, but it only took me 5 minutes to go from “Y IS SHE HERE. GO AWAY. GOD I HATE U SO MUCH” to “tht poor bby, don’t worry, I’ll love u”.

Yes, it’s probably logical no one’s hating Starlight, but as a viewer, she’s not paying retribution in return to what she’s done. No one is expecting a good villain to pay retribution, a reforming one however, either is expected to make up for it in some way, or you feel so bad for them, you don’t care. That’s how I see it anyway. I suppose Discord is an exception to this, he’s too well liked as a villain and it’s not like those traits everyone liked about him are gone.

Again, not caught up, but this is my observation according to how the fandom is reacting.
Background Pony #6643
I love how Starlight is like “try it, then”.
You know, I actually really love the idea of the teacher’s pet Sunset and the trouble kid Starlight. Might make for a good japanese manga style slice of life school comedy.
@VNagato
which is why I really enjoy Starlight’s portrayal in No Second Prances–since apparently Starlight is still a jerk who has zero social awareness. You mentioned that in RR, no one fully trusts Sunset, this is true and I agree with you. So if the students in RR didn’t trust Sunset, then how come nopony in Ponyville looks at Starlight in distrust? Is Starlight suddenly forgiven? Well, that’s unclear.
The thing with Starlight is that–she stays in Ponyville and spends her time mostly in the castle. So, what does Ponyville have against Starlight? NOT A THING. Nopony but Spike witnessed the battle between Twilight and Starlight, so unless Twilight told everypony the story, Ponyville has zero grudge against Starlight.

I don’t really like Starlight Glimmer myself… I like her better before she was redeemed. I wish she got banished instead of redeemed, but again, that’s just me… If you like Starlight, good for you, that’s perfectly fine with me. I tried to like her, but I just can’t do it…

I’m not done season 5 yet (yeah I know, I’m behind af) but I feel like Starlight’s treatment after being a huge villain, to being so easily accepted by the group is what pissed people off. I mean Sunset got that kind of treatment too, but it’s apparent that no one fully trusted her in RR. I like Starlight from what I’ve seen from the Cutie Map, but I don’t like the idea of her being a main character or being a goody-goody.
Maybe I’m just sick of reforming villains, it’s like the new go-to now for the show.
